Ensuite 3

November 2023 - We now have one super luxurious luxurious heated bathroom completed this month. Just finishing off the painting of doors.

This bathroom had started out in a dreadful state. We had cleaned it and put plastic edging around the top of the bath, where it meets the tiles, to try and eke it through. It had an old cast iron bath, which was eventually broken up to get it out. The toilet wasn't great at flushing when we moved in and it was becoming more and more blocked until we had to advise any guest using the adjoining room that the toilet was 'wee only' and nothing else. We have three toilets (at the moment) in the house so there was always another to be able to be used. We had two different plumbers round. The first said the blockage wasn't in the bathroom, the second said that the blockage wasn't in the sewer pipe outside and it wasn't until we got the third that he found the blockage. It was at the back of the toilet, as it went through the wall to the sewer pipe outside. Someone had pushed a double pack of soap tablets into the toilet and these were in polythene, which was gradually leaking and enabling the soap to soak up water and get larger and block the toilet more and more! Soap is expensive when it has to be removed by employing three plumbers!

As for the renovation, I think the photos speak for themselves. Thanks to Sandy Crowe, our builder, as he spent many hours replacing everything (floor, ceiling, walls, window as well as heating, plumbing, electrics and fittings) in this little damp, cold room and bringing it fully up to date.

The bathroom in June 2021

Simple! Soap found wedged in the back of the toilet

Puffed up soap packet! The cause of all the problems

We (the royal 'we') started taking the bathroom apart

Looking back from the window. The wood panelling is the other side of the spiral staircase and the wood to the right was a cupboard at the end of the bath

Frame of the cupboard behind the door leading to Bedroom 3. Underlay was under a scrap of carpet, this was an interim measure for any of our guests

Took the underlay out and were practicing removing woodchip paper from the walls. We didn't need to do this but we wanted to know how hard it was.

Hard work and it just doesn't look good. We have woodchip on EVERY surface throughout the house! Oh *******!

Repairs needed to the ceiling

Bathroom fittings removed. This home will no longer have a bath in it. We only use showers

Damage to the ceiling under where the bathroom light was fixed, needing to be repaired

Moisture proof drylining covering the walls and making the end wall for the shower. Curve of stairs painted white

New window in place, taping done on dryliner and tanking in place for the shower

Wetroom former in place with underfloor heating installed and tiling starting to be put in

Sandy did well with the tiling over the former. Great design  even though he hates tiling

New ceiling in place and ready for downlighters

Furniture going in, ready to take sanitaryware and door knobs soon. Tiling to be done around the window ledge and walls

Panelling on wall and painted. We chose Dulux Soft Stone for the top and Dulux Soft Truffle for the panels, doors and frame

Tiled shower area with tiled toiletry shelf and glass screen for the Grohe Rainfall shower

The finished wetroom - so much more pleasant for anyone visiting us now, especially as Bedroom 3 next door has been refreshed too
