Porto

Porto - 29 June 2023

Last day in Portugal, in Porto. Moored back on the side of the Douro River in Gaia, on the opposite bank to Porto. Beautiful weather again for this last day. It has been a wonderfully relaxing holiday and exploration of the sights in the northern part of Portugal and a bit of Spain.

This morning, our last morning in Portugal for this trip, we went for a city walk. We crossed the river on one of their taxi boats and then walked up towards the bridge over the Douro, where the fireworks had been when we first arrived a week ago. We viewed tiny ancient streets before arriving at the Porto side of the bridge, where we climbed into a funicular to take us to the top levels of Porto itself. The bridge has a road at the bottom and rail at the top. We walked the upper levels, being briefly shown churches and cathedrals, but also vertiginous steep stone staircases and tiny ancient social housing, now fallen into disrepair and being too expensive for people to renovate would you believe. We also went into the marvellous train station, converted from a convent many years ago and featuring a fantastic array of beautiful tiled scenes within its walls.

We chose the option to climb a tower for the city views and then meandered back through more modern thoroughfares, back to the river and the boat. The afternoon was spent relaxing on the boat's Sun Deck again, this time in the centre of a thriving city, before having to pack to fly back to Glasgow tomorrow. It's been a great 10 days, thoroughly recommend it. The Viking crew were a very slick operation and everything was organised very well. Great company, good service, fine food and drink and a very relaxing time.
